| | About vehicle Whats in a name?
by 1967, versions of the dino engine had appeared in racing cars, road car prototypes and even in fiats, but the updated, pininfarina-styled 195hp dino 246 gt made its noisy debut at the 1969 geneva auto show. Although the car was named for enzo ferraris son dino, the car never carried the ferrari name. In fact, fiat actually produced the main engine parts while ferrari did only the assembling.
holding the road
the dinos handling and braking were extraordinary, enabling even amateur drivers to recover from all but the worst mistakes. However, the combined roar of clanging tappets, whining cam chains and an untamed exhaust system made quick trips to the market sound like the back stretch at sebring. The dinos interior was cramped, a consequence of the cars chief benefit and major drawback its midmount
engine. But for the thrills of racetrack driving, it was easy to give up a little comfort. The dino 246 gt engine ivas descended from a formula one racing version used in the early sixties. |
