Ten years later, bouton developed the worlds first high-speed small gasoline engine, but de dion-bouton did not begin making four-wheeled automobiles until 1899. So successful were these vis-a-vis (face-to-face) models, so called because the two seats faced each other, that nearly 3,000 were constructed. | Specifications performance Top speed of almost 25 mph

| | About vehicle One-cylinder engines
compact, light, durable and economical, these de dion-boutons were powered by single-cylinder high-performance engines with output two or three times higher than other automakers. The size of the engine varied: One model had a 326cc, 2.75hp engine; The type e had a 400cc, 3.5hp one; And the type g came with a 4.5hp, half-litre engine. A combination steering column-gearshift was in the center of the car, and the engine was under the rear seat.
the de dion rear axle
these early automobiles also benefited from the famous de dion rear axle. The power from the transmission to the final drive was carried by
universally joined half-shafts independent from the dead rear axle. In this way the rear axle alone could bear the weight of the car, moving in relation to the frame. This rear suspension was abandoned by the company after world war i but is still used by many modern sports cars. Many early de dion-bouton automobiles had a central steering column-gearshift and seats that faced each other. This one is only 92 in. Long |
